The Department of Pediatric Surgery was established in September 1965 in connection with the opening of the Institute of Pediatrics. The first head of the department was the rector of Vinnytsia State Medical Institute named after M. I Pirogov prof. S. I. Korkhov.
The teaching program at the department included general, faculty, hospital, military-field and pediatric surgery and therefore the full name of the department was the Department of Pediatric Surgery with a course of pediatric surgery. Throughout its existence, the department is located on the basis of the surgical department of the Vinnytsia Central Regional Hospital. For some time the base of the department was also the surgical department of the regional hospital named after M. I. Pirogov.
Professor S. I. Korkhov laid the foundations of educational and methodical work of the department, developed programs, curricula and formed the teaching staff. The first teachers of the department were PhD, Associate Professor I. F. Godlevsky, PhD, Associate Professor Yu. P. Kukuruza, assistant V. P. Ostrovsky, assistant V. M. Furman, assistant P. L. Potolochny. In 1967, Acting Associate Professor of the Department was elected an assistant of the Department of Hospital Surgery, PhD T. A. Kadoschuk.
Under the leadership of Professor S. I. Korkhov who was at that time the author of 42 scientific papers, the department actively conducted research on such pressing issues as peritonitis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, acute pancreatitis and others. Electrophysiological changes of the cerebral cortex and electrogastrographic studies in these diseases were studied. For this purpose, electrophysiological and histological laboratories were established at the department. Under the guidance of Professor S. I. Korkhov, assistants of the department P. L. Potolochny and V. M. Furman successfully defended their dissertations. In 1967, Professor S. I. Korkhov left the department in connection with his appointment as rector of the Odessa Medical Institute.
During the next 3 years (1967-1970) the department was headed by Associate Professor IF Godlevsky who published 23 scientific papers at that time.
In 1968, in connection with the entry of Associate Professor I. F. Godlevsky in doctoral studies, the duties of the head of the department were performed by Associate Professor T. A. Kadoshchuk. From the end of 1970 the department was headed by associate professor V. M. Nechiporuk, at that time the author of 74 scientific works.
As part of the implementation of this concept in 1977 on the basis of the department was established Vinnytsia Regional Center for Surgery of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas, on the basis of which in 1987 an intensive care unit was opened. The specialized Center created by the department became widely known not only in the region, but also far beyond its borders, as evidenced by the admission of patients from all regions of Ukraine and the USSR (Vladivostok, Siberia, Urals, Central Asia, Caucasus, Murmansk, Moscow and others); numerous publications in the international, union and republican press. During this period, the Center became the leading surgical clinic in the entire region of Ukraine which has experience of more than 3,000 operations on various forms of acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, including more than 2,000 direct operations on the pancreas, occupying one of the leading positions in the USSR and being at the forefront of the state in terms of treatment (mortality, number of complications and relapses). For many years, the department has been cooperating effectively with the Institute of Surgery and Transplantology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (formerly the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery) — the leading scientific center of surgery in the USSR and Europe. The experience of the Center and the results of its work were highly appreciated by the Minister of Health and Director of the All-Union Scientific Center of Surgery of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the USSR Academy of Sciences B. V. Petrovsky.
In 1970’s to 1980’s, with the Department of Operative Surgery of Vinnytsia National Medical University headed by Prof. G. V. Terentyev, a method of prevention of bacterial complications in operations on the abdominal cavity was developed, experimental models of a number of diseases were created.
The results of the great work of the department on the problem of diseases of the pancreaticoduodenal zone was a number of prepared dissertations (doctoral dissertation of T. A. Kadoshchuk defended in 1982; candidate dissertations: A. A. Lugovyi — 1977, S. I. Androsov — 1987, A. V. Funikov — 1993, Fuad Haj Kassem — 1990). From 1987 to 1989 at the department of clinical residency studied Kanikovsky O. E. who under the guidance of prof. Kadoshchuk T. A. defended his dissertation in 1992.
Since 2006, the department has been headed by Professor O. E. Kanikovsky, PhD (scientific supervisor Prof. T. A. Kadoshchuk) and doctoral (scientific consultant Prof. M. Yu. Nichitaylo) whose dissertations are devoted to the pathology of the pancreas. Surgery of the pancreaticoduodenal zone remained the scientific direction of the department. Under his supervision, the candidate’s dissertation was defended by assistant Savolyuk S. I., assistant Kharchuk O. V., PhD. Hnatyuk Yu. P., PhD Mosyondz V. V. Issues of acute and chronic pancreatitis, pathology of the hepatic biliary tract, duodenum are being developed. New methods of direct interventions on the pancreas are being developed.
Currently, the head of the department is Associate Professor O. I. Bondarchuk, Associate Professor Androsov S. I., Associate Professor Sander S. V., Associate Professor Fedzhaga O. Currently the clinic is located in three medical institutions: the main base is the Vinnytsia Central Clinical District Hospital, as well as the Hospital for the Disabled of the Great Patriotic War and the City Clinical Hospital No. 3.
The department is a leading base in Ukraine at the Faculty of Medical Psychologists and Dentists.
The staff of the department completes five candidate and one doctoral dissertation. Active cooperation is carried out with the Institute of Surgery and Transplantology of Kyiv, with colleagues from Poland.
The staff of the department continues intensive scientific research in the extremely topical problem of hepatopancreatoduodenal surgery.
