The Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases was organized in 1934 on the basis of the Vinnytsia Regional Dermatological and Venereology Dispensary which began operating in 1921 on Pershotravneva Street (Magistratskaya) in a room adapted for a hospital.
The first head of the department was Professor S. A Glauberzon (1934-1937). During this period, the staff of the department paid much attention to the establishment of the educational process, material support and organization of research work.
In 1937 the department was headed by Professor M. Z. Yukhnevych (1937-1941), a pupil of the Odessa School of Dermatovenereology. During these years, the staff of the department studied the etiopathogenesis of herpes zoster, shingles, the relationship of pathological changes in the skin with dysfunction of the nervous system and internal organs and improved physiotherapy treatments for dermatoses. In the pre-war years, biochemical methods of examination of patients were widely implemented by the staff of the department to study the clinical course of dermatoses.
From July 1945 to 1961 the department was headed by Professor Yu. M. Levin. Under the leadership of Yu. M. Levin, scientific work was revived, the level of educational-methodical, medical-consultative work of teachers and healthcare workers was raised, a model museum was created to improve the education of students. For many years Yukhym Myronovych was the chairman of the Vinnytsia Regional Society of Dermatovenereologists. Scientific and practical experience of Yu. M. Levin is reflected in 90 scientific works (monographs, articles, methodical letters, brochures), 38 of which were published in foreign scientific journals in German and French.
The main direction of scientific research of the department in the postwar period was an in-depth study of the incidence of dermatoses in employees of sugar factories in Vinnytsia region.
From 1962 to 1972 the department was headed by the Candidate of Medical Sciences and later Professor N. I. Tumashova. During this period, the teaching staff of the department was completely renewed, research work with young staff was intensified. Micronutrient metabolism, electrolytes and autoimmune reactivity in patients with chronic and severe dermatoses were studied. Close constructive cooperation was established with the Department of Medical Chemistry of Ivano-Frankivsk Medical Institute. According to the results of scientific research, in 1967 the doctoral dissertation on the topic: “Autoimmunological reactions and some trace elements in skin and sexually transmitted diseases” was defended by N. I. Tumashova, as well as 6 PhD theses (A. M. Borisenko, S. K. Psyuk, S. G. Mazorkuk, B. O. Borisenko, G. K. Garmatyuk, L. M. Kovaleva).
From 1973 to 1994 the department was headed by a pupil of the Kyiv School of Dermatovenereology Professor I. N. Lyashenko. At this time, scientists of the department studied the role in the pathogenesis of skin diseases of redox processes, compensatory-adaptive mechanisms of the body, the influence of local spa and balneological factors of Zhytomyr, Khmilnyk, immunological reactivity and processes of lipid peroxidation in the process of complex rehabilitation and correction of patients with chronic dermatoses. After an in-depth and thorough analysis, the results of the study were presented in doctoral and candidate dissertations. In 2007 the doctoral dissertation was defended by S.A. Bondar on the topic “Sorption Therapy of Severe and Chronic Common Dermatoses”. Under the guidance of Professor I. N. Lyashenko 7 candidate’s dissertations were defended (Sklyarov V. I., Kilikeev O. P., Bondar S. A., Gezy B. M., Trunina T. I., Sklyarov S. V., Anfilova M. R.).
In December 2009 doctor of medical sciences, professor Sergey Anatolyevich Bondar was elected as the Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases by competition at the Academic Council of Vinnytsia National Medical University.
At the department 3 doctors of medical sciences and 3 candidates of medical sciences work and carry out treatment-and-prophylactic and consultative-diagnostic work. 7 employees have the highest category, the first — 1.
The department comprises 7 graduate students and 11 clinical residents.
During 1999-2018 15 master’s theses were defended at the department, and 7 candidate dissertations were performed.
Scientists of the department work on the improvement and development of methods of diagnosis, prevention and complex therapy of patients with chronic dermatoses and sexually transmitted diseases. Every year on the basis of the department more than 6 thousand patients of dermatovenereological profile receive consultative-diagnostic and treatment-and-prophylactic care, and 3-4 scientific-practical conferences are held.
Students of 4 faculties and foreign citizens are trained at the department, interns in the specialty of dermatovenereology and “General practice — family medicine”, doctors-cadets, in the specialty “General practice — family medicine” are trained.
Since 1934, the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases has prepared 4 doctoral and 22 candidate dissertations, published 5 monographs, 6 information letters, approved 22 patents for inventions, developed and implemented 71 innovation proposals and published more than 1,200 scientific papers. Scientists of the department maintain close ties with the departments of dermatovenereology of other higher medical educational institutions, SI “Institute of Dermatology and Venereology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”.
