The department of Pediatrics, Medical Faculty of Vinnytsia Medical Institute named after M. I. Pirogov was organized in 1934. The first head of the department for ten years was Professor B. P. Brukhansky, and then — Professor A. A. Razumovsky. In 1951-1952 the department was headed by associate professor S. A. Piotrovskaya-Wexler, from 1952 to 1960 — Associate Professor M. M. Krasnogorsky. In 1962 the head of the department was associate professor E. M. Mechynska. In 1964-1965 the department was headed by Professor O. I. Hnatyuk, and then – Assoc. V. A. Chekanov (1965-1966). From 1966 to 1996, the Department of Pediatrics was headed by Professor M. B. Tsaruk. In 1996, the Department of Pediatrics was renamed the Department of Propaedeutics of Pediatrics with Child Care. It was headed by Professor LM Bulat.
Today the department employs the following staff: associate professor L. I. Laiko, associate professor M. R. Lipko, associate professor Kurets O. O., associate professor Cherepaiina, associate professor Katilov O. V, associate professor Kuleshov O. V., associate professor Yushchenko L. O., associate professor Lysunets O. V., associate professor Medrazhevska Ya. A., associate professor Fik L. O., associate professor Oliynyk V. S., associate professor Kotsur L. D., associate professor Oniskova O. V., associate professor Antonets T. I. and assistants PhD (Medicine) Chigir I. V. and Merkulova D. O.
The base of the department is Vinnytsia City Clinical Hospital “Mother and Child Center” which includes a reception and diagnostic department, a department of newborns, a department of pathology of newborns, a department of early childhood, a department of older childhood and a gastroenterology department. In addition, the base of the department is also the II Children’s Polyclinic.
Students of the second and third courses of the medical faculty No. 1 in the specialty “Medical Business” (including English) and the faculty No. 2 in the specialty “Pediatrics” study at the department. In addition, fourth-year students of the Faculty of Dentistry (including Russian and English) are also trained. The department also trains interns specializing in family medicine.
Teachers of the department perform extensive educational and methodological work on optimizing the educational process and development and implementation of students’ knowledge and skills according to the program of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and its central methodical office for higher medical education for higher medical institutions of III-IV level of accreditation in pediatrics.
Employees of the department are constantly improving the educational process. The main form of education is the independent work of students at the bedside of a sick child and the examination of children in diagnostic rooms. The department has developed fundamentally new forms and methods of improving the educational process using computer programs, videos and created a database of various tasks for students. Subject-schematic modeling of symptoms that are characteristic of the pathology of children of different ages and selected diagnostic criteria are widely used in teaching. The main scientific direction of the department is clinical and physiological studies of thermoregulation, bioenergy and nervous system in various functional disorders and inflammatory diseases in children. In addition, the department has been studying the state of health of children and their physical development for 20 years living in contaminated areas as a result of the Chernobyl accident. With the help of modern methods developed diagnostic and therapeutic tactics and rehabilitation of children affected by the Chernobyl accident. In addition, the department has extensive experience in helping children with prolonged low-grade fever, as well as providing emergency care to patients with hyperthermia and febrile seizures. Based on this material, 7 methodical recommendations for pediatricians were issued, and 9 candidate dissertations were defended.
For 10 years employees of the department provided assistance to the Zhytomyr region, especially in the years after the Chernobyl accident. Examinations of children were conducted directly in the Narodych district of the Zhytomyr region.
The methods of remote thermography with the help of thermovision camera “Torch” and “Rainbow” were used at the department for scientific and diagnostic purposes. Diagnostic criteria for many diseases have been developed.
Since 2016 at the department, together with the Department of General Hygiene and Ecology GDR is being conducted on the topic “Physiological and Hygienic Assessment of the Adaptation of Children, Adolescents and Youth to the Conditions of Study in Modern Educational Institutions and the Scientific Foundations of University Hygiene: Career Guidance, Problems of Implementation of Health Care Technologies and the Creation of a Preventive Educational Environment”.
The main clinical base of the department is the clinical hospital “The Center of Mother and Child” which provides medical and consulting assistance to employees of the department.
Additional clinical facilities include Vinnytsia Children’s Regional Clinical Hospital, Primary Health Care Center No. 5.
