Since the opening of the inpatient medical institute in Vinnytsia (1934), classes have been held at four courses of treatment and prevention and pharmaceutical faculties.

The course of pharmacology was taught in the 4th and 5th semesters (2nd and 3rd year). General lectures were given until 1937 by Professor Lev Konstantinovich Moreinis in the educational building of the Medical Institute on Lenin street (now Soborna Street). This building was demolished in the 60s of the last century and was located to the right of the building of the current city executive committee. Practical classes in pharmacology were conducted in the same educational building by teachers of the Pharmaceutical Institute and general practitioners of medical institutions of Vinnytsia, and since 1936 — in the morphological building of the Medical Institute after its construction.

The Department of Pharmacology was established in 1937 as an independent structural unit. It was headed by Associate Professor Yuliy Semenovych Grosman who previously worked at the Odessa Medical Institute. Under his leadership, the material base of the department was created, and the educational process was organized. The scientific activity of the department was related to the study of the effect of theophylline on blood vessels. During this period, the department worked as assistants to F. P. Olgina, F. S. Litvak and M. I. Gaza who in 1940 published a short prescription guide for doctors.

From 1962 to 1964 the head of the department was Professor Vasyl Mykhailovych Chernov who had previously worked at the Chisinau Medical Institute. During this period, the research of the department was devoted to the experimental justification of the use of novocaine in peptic ulcer disease. The staff of the department was replenished with assistants R. P. Redko (since 1974 — associate professor), V. Ye. Verbytsky and graduate student N. I. Ivanova.

In March 1964, the head of the department became Associate Professor Alexander Stolyarchuk who held this position until 1991. During this period, assistants worked N. I. Ivanova, A. P. Kobernik, P. O. Galenko-Yaroshevsky, G. I. Stepanyuk, Yu. M. Furman, O. N. Ivanov, L. P. Soleyko, T. I. Lysa, T.V. Taratuta, O. G. Kozachishin, V. V. Danilchuk (transferred from the Department of Normal Anatomy), A. I. Kirnichny, V. P. Bobruk (transferred from the Department of Forensic Medicine).

In 1970, O.O. Stolyarchuk defended his doctoral dissertation and in 1971 became a professor. He introduced, developed and maintained an innovative style in all areas of its activities. Together with his teacher Professor K. S. Shadursky, Alexander Alexandrovich established extensive ties with synthetic chemists — Professors A. P. Terentyev, O. M. Grinyov, О. М. Kostom, V. G. Yashunsky (Moscow), F. A. Trofimov (Obninsk), A. P. Ponomarev (Saratov), Z. S. Solomko (Dnepropetrovsk), V. P. Marshtupa (Donetsk); pharmacologists of Russia — Academician M. D. Mashkovsky and professors P. V. Sergeev, B. I. Lyubimov (Moscow), V. M. Salyaev (Yaroslavl), O. S. Zakharevsky and V. I. Talapin (Minsk). Close ties and exchange of information with pharmacologists of Ukraine — professors V. G. Zapadnyuk (Institute of Gerontology, Kyiv), I.V. Komissarov (Donetsk), M. P. Skakun (Ternopil), S. M. Drogovoz (Kharkiv).

Professor OO Stolyarchuk paid great attention to the training of young pharmacologists who studied with him in graduate school (N. I. Ivanova, T. F. Troyan, M. M. Tarasyuk, G. I. Stepaniuk, L. P. Soleyko, Yu. M. Furman, T. V. Taratuta, T. I. Lysa, N. I. Voloshchuk and others). All of them defended their dissertations, and P. O. Galenko-Yaroshevsky, G. I. Stepaniuk and Yu. M. Furman — doctoral dissertations. Doctoral students of Professor O. O. Stolyarchuk are heads the departments nowadays: Corresponding Member of RAMS, prof. O. N. Galenko-Yaroshevsky at the Kuban Medical Academy, professors G. I. Stepaniuk and R. P. Piskun in Vinnytsia NMU, prof. S. M. Lemkin at Saransk Medical University, prof. B.G. Storozhuk at the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 2 of VNMU.

The All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Pharmacology (Kharkiv, Simferopol) is of great interest among 3rd year students. Several dozen students annually take part in the selection round which is conducted by the department. The winners defend the honor of the department and the university at the All-Ukrainian Olympiad where they often win prizes (S. Lysenko, 1998; O. Smolinsky, 1999; D. Pestunov, 2000). Of great cognitive and educational value for students are pharmacological quizzes which are held annually on the initiative of O. O. Stolyarchuk since the early seventies.

The final student scientific conference is held annually at the department. Its winners take part in interuniversity and all-Ukrainian scientific conferences of students and young scientists. Its laureates were students A. B. Gordiychuk (1999), S. A. Lysenko (1999, 2000), V. V. Nikolaychuk (2000), O. P. Drachuk, E. Shishkovsky (2001), O. Tenditna (2002, 2003).

Since November 1991, the Department of Pharmacology has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Georgiy Ivanovich Stepaniuk — a student of Prof. O.O. Stolyarchuk. During this period, within the department worked and continued to work professor O.O. Stolyarchuk (until 2003), associate professors R. P. Redko, N. I. Ivanova, V. V. Danilchuk, A. I. Kirnichny, N. I. Voloshchuk, assistants S. V. Sergeev (since 2006 — Associate Professor), PhD N. G. Stepanyuk, PhD O. S. Pashinska, O. P. Lonska, senior laboratory assistant O. M. Denisyuk.

The department has been significantly replenished with modern scientific equipment which was acquired through fruitful cooperation with scientists of the research and production center “Borshchahiv HFZ”, Kyiv (General Director LV Bezpalko). This is a Transonic T-106 flowmeter (the USA) which can be used to measure the level of volumetric blood flow velocity in the vessels of the brain, heart, kidneys, stomach and other parts; “Yutas-oxy”-201 pulse oximeter and installation of a sucrose bridge to assess contractions of muscle structures.

Employees of the department participated in the International Congresses of Pharmacologists, Clinical Pharmacologists, Gerontologists, All-Union and Ukrainian Congresses and Conferences of Pharmacologists, Physiologists, Biochemists, Gerontologists, Cardiologists, Morphologists, etc.
