The Department of Pathological Anatomy, Vinnytsia National Medical University named after M. I. Pirogov was organized in 1934 by a practical doctor M. O. Vakulenko and was initially housed in one of the buildings of the regional hospital named after M. I. Pirogov. It has received an auditorium, classroom, laboratory and section.

 

In 1936 the department moved to the administrative building of the regional hospital, and in 1940 to the building which was vacated in connection with the transition of the Department of Normal Anatomy to the morphological building.

 

Since 1959, the department has been transferred to the rebuilt left wing of the morphological building where it is located nowadays. Assistants in the pre-war period were G. P. Baranovsky and G. L. Pashkevich, and after the war — G. Ya. Borachuk, S. H. Alimbek, S. H. Verkhatsky, P. I. Ulyanetska and associate professor P. G. Kostenko.

 

For a short time from 1948 to 1949 the department was headed by an Associate Professor Pavlo Kostenko, who was born in the village. Rezunenkovo, Kolomak district, Kharkiv region in the family of a middle-class peasant, Ukrainian.

 

In 1949, Associate Professor M. V Konstantinovich was elected as the head of the department who used to head the Department of Pathological Anatomy of the Kharkiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians.

 

From 1949 until V. M. Konstantinovich’s death in 1964, the research work of the department was carried out with clinicians, mainly on the problems of malignant tumors. Original research was conducted on the study of mixed tuberculous and pneumococcal meningitis which formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation “On Mixed Tuberculous Meningitis” (1958).

 

During the period from 1964 to 1987, associate professors worked at the department: M. R. Shramko, V. I. Zhabin, V. G. Kozlov, P. F. Shamray, M. S. Pushkar, assistants I. Ya. Britvan, O. P. Bezkorovainy, V. T. Rautskiene, V. M. Kudenko, L. O. Macedonska, М. Р. Boreyko, V. V. Biktimirov.

 

Employees of the department published more than 250 scientific papers, including the monograph of prof. Ye. I. Makovskaya on the topic “Pathological Anatomy of Intoxication with Pesticides”.

 

The educational process was properly improved, elements of machine control of students’ knowledge, algorithms of practical classes, graphs of logical structure, etc. were introduced, the museum of slides and gross specimens was replenished, hard copies of teaching guides were published.

 

From 1987 to 1994 the department was headed by Associate Professor V. G. Kozlov, associate professors M. S. Pushkar, M. R. Boreyko and VT Rautskiene worked with him, as well as assistants V. V. Scherbaniuk, V. P. Sorokoumov, M. M. Yakubovsky, O. V. Fedorchenko, V. О. Benjaminov (all were graduates of Vinnytsia Medical Institute).

 

From 1994 to 2008 the department was headed by Professor Victor Biktimirov.

 

In 2001, the Department of Forensic Medicine was attached to the department and since then it is called the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Forensic Medicine and Law.
