The department was organized in 1934 on the basis of the departments of the Pharmaceutical Institute and therefore was sufficiently provided with visual aids, drugs, collections, reagents, tables and more.

The first head of the department was Professor A. Sevastyanov, and the first assistants of the department were: A. Novitsky (studied the mollusks of the Southern Bug River), M. I. Elperina who began to study opisthorchiasis, M.V. Ivasykwho performed the work “Workshop on Pharmacognosy” (for pharmaceutical institutes), and V. N. Pykhtina who in 1940 defended her dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences on the topic “The Role of the Adrenal Cortex in the Development of Refractory Thyroid Disease”.

In 1944, Associate Professor V. N. Pykhtina was appointed head of the department. There was no single direction of scientific work at the department, although the research was quite interesting. Therefore, the assistant O. O. Vlasenko studied the biology of primrose flowering and the conditions of accumulation of vitamin C in it. Together with Assoc. A. D. Beikina and as. M. V. Ivasyk, she took part in creating a physical-geographical description of Khmilnyk and its environs.

Later, the team began to study parasitology. Assistant M. V. Ivasyk studied the conditions for the spread of worm infestations among the population of Vinnytsia. Assistant S. A. Khuda studied the distribution of subspecies of common and malarial mosquitoes in the Vinnytsia region.

By 1949, two scientific works of medical significance were performed: “Worm Infestations in Children of Children’s Institutions in Vinnytsia” and “Effect of Adrenal Cortex Extracts on the Normal Thyroid Gland”.

From 1952 to September 1958 the department was headed by Associate Professor A. D. Beikina; she performed work on the study of long-fruited jute. Assistant P.T. Zozulya conducted sanitary and hydrobiological study of the Southern Bug River in the Khmilnyk-Sabariv section.

Within the institute the department created a plot of medicinal plants with an area of 0.2 hectares. It featured up to 20 groups of plants, including expectorants, vitamins, diuretics, vomit, hemostatic, insecticidal, bitter, anthelmintic, diaphoretic, astringent and others — a total of more than 130 species in the open ground and more than 60 species housed in educational rooms and corridors.

In 1959, Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences G. A. Mashtaler who worked in this position for 4 years was elected Head of the Department of Biology. Under his leadership, the staff of the department was engaged in the development of vegetative hybridization of animals. The influence of embryonic tissue of organisms on changes in morphogenesis, wound healing, etc. was studied. Prof. G. A. Mashtaler worked on the topic “Morphogenetic Changes of Farm Birds under the Influence of Embryonic Tissues of Other Species”. Work was carried out to study the interaction of the thyroid and thyroid glands, the effect of pantocrionide on wound healing, and others. To the textbook “Darwinism” edited by P. L. Ivanchenko prof. GA Mashtaler wrote three chapters: “Achievements of Michurin’s Biology Abroad”, “Main Directions of the Evolutionary Process” and “Origin of Life on Earth”.

Assistant P. T. Zozulya performed research on the topic “Morphological Changes in Chickens under the Influence of Embryonic Tissues of Other Breeds”. Individuals with morphological features of other breeds were obtained. He also conducted experiments to replace part of the egg protein of different breeds of chickens and ducks. Individuals with morphological features characteristic of the donor breed were obtained, they differed in greater growth.

In 1961, N. A. Lysa came to the department as an assistant, she developed the topic: “Biological Effect of Radioactive Water of Khmilnyk Resort on the Body of Some Invertebrates”.

From 1963 to 1964 the duties of the head of the department were performed by PhD N. P. Lizogub.

Since 1964, the department was headed by Associate Professor M. A. Paliy who introduced a new direction in the scientific work of the department to study the most dangerous helminthic diseases of humans and animals (opisthorchiasis, echinococcosis, trichinosis), parasitofauna of fish, sanitary and hydrobiological research. basin of the Southern Bug. Assistant P. T. Zozulya studied phyto- and zooplankton ponds of fish farms in Vinnytsia region and their sanitary condition. Assistant S. D. Voloshchuk studied echinococcosis of animals and humans in the Vinnytsia region. In 1966, N. G. Kolomiets, Candidate of Biological Sciences, was enrolled as an assistant of the department.

In 1972, assistant N. A. Lysa defended her dissertation on the topic “The Spread of Tetanus and Anthrax in Connection with the Soil and Climatic Conditions of the Forest-steppe and Polissya Zones of Ukraine”. The department has constantly been replenished with new teachers: since 1969 — assistant R. V. Balevskaya, since 1974 — assistant Bogachuk G. P., since 1968 — associate professor N. P. Lizogub, since 1975 — assistant A. A. Vashchuk, with 1976 — assistant L. V. Tindare.

In 1977, after the retirement of Associate Professor MA Paliy, Associate Professor MG Polivoda was elected Head of the Department. Since then scientific work at the department was performed on several topics. Until 1983, studies were conducted to study the effects of vibration and noise on the growing organism, and from 1984 to 1989 the topic of susceptibility to dermatomycoses was studied on the basis of correlation with genetic markers. In 1978, Associate Professor A. A. Vashchuk defended his dissertation on the topic “The Use of Low Barometric Pressure to Detect the Effects of Radiation Damage”, in 1987 L. V. Tindare — on the topic “Conditions of Hypokinesia”. At this time, the department employs young teachers: O. L. Severova, V. O. Benjaminov, O. V. Palamarchuk. The department was transferred to the educational building 2 in 1987. Unfortunately, there was no place for the museum here, and it was disbanded.

Since 1948, the student scientific circle has been working at the department. Members of the circle, under the guidance of teachers of the department, speak at meetings and general student conferences of the institute and other universities of Ukraine with reports on various issues of biological science and the results of their own research on hypothermia, helminths and others.

In 1993, the head of the department was elected Doctor of Biological Sciences R. P. Piskun. Associate professors of the department are: N. O. Lysa, N. G. Kolomiets, A. A. Vashchuk. Senior Lecturer — Candidate of Biological Sciences LV Tindare, Assistants — Candidate of Biological Sciences T. O. Bolokhovska and O. O. Reznyuk, senior assistants – G.P. Mikitiuk, О. В. Mishchenko and laboratory assistant I. V. Mospan. In connection with the transition to a new program and a cyclical form of studying the subject, the main efforts of employees are aimed at educational and methodological work. Improving the educational process goes in different directions, both by improving the quality of teaching and by technical equipment of the educational process. Much attention is paid to individual work with students. This is especially true in the section “Medical Genetics”, where for each lesson for students developed individual tasks which include both theoretical issues and tasks that have a specific clinical focus. Based on the fact that over the past 20 years the curriculum of the department has changed 6 times and teachers of the department have accumulated considerable experience in developing guidelines and guidelines, for the current years the department is developing scientific and methodological planning topics to create guidelines, manuals, recommendations and others, didactic and methodical materials for domestic and foreign students in Ukrainian, Russian and English.

In 2016, V. M. Shkarup, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Senior Researcher, was elected Head of the Department. The professor of the department is Doctor of Biological Sciences R. P. Piskun. Associate professors of the department are: PhD. Shevchuk T. I., PhD Gorbatyuk S. M., PhD Polesya T. L., PhD Khlestova S. S., Candidate of Biological Sciences Grinchak N. M., PhD Biloshitska A.
