In 1935 an associate professor’s course of infectious diseases was established at the Department of Faculty Therapy, and in 1938 an independent Department of Infectious Diseases was founded, headed by the infectious disease doctor V. V. Masalov. 3 years later he defended his dissertation on the topic “Use of Sulfonamide and its Derivatives in Meningococcal Infection”. V. V. Masalov headed the department before the Great Patriotic War and in the first years of liberation of Vinnytsia from German occupation. The first assistants of the department were N. M. Berg, E. F. Grobman, A. G. Loyferman. The main direction of research was the study of epidemiological cerebrospinal meningitis. During 1945-1949 the department was headed by E. F. Grobman who defended his dissertation in 1947 on the topic “Comparative Evaluation of the Treatment of Cerebrospinal (Meningococcal) Meningitis”. From 1946 until 1955 Apollon Mykolayovych Kalyshynsky, who graduated in 1914 from the Medical Faculty of the French University in Beirut, worked as an assistant at the department.

From January 1949 the department was headed by the candidate of medical sciences F. F. Yurchak – a member of the guerrilla movement in Ukraine (1941-1945). In 1948 he defended his dissertation “Typification of Malaria Foci of the Irtysh Basin and Prospects for their Recovery”, and in 1962 – his doctoral dissertation “Etiopathogenetic Treatment of Acute Dysentery”. Under the leadership of F. F. Yurchyk, staff of the department studied the epidemiology and clinic of shigellosis (dysentery) and typhus.

Since 1953, the department has been replenished with new teachers. Thus, working at the department, L. I. Bogachyk defended her PhD thesis on typhus in 1956 and then headed the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Ternopil Medical Institute.

Ya. P. Latenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences, was selected as an assistant in 1956, in 1960 – as an Associate Professor. In 1968, Ya. P. Latenko defended his doctoral dissertation. He has headed the Department of Infectious Diseases since 1963.

In 1961, after graduating from graduate school at Kiev Medical Institute, D. F. Kirichenko was enrolled as an assistant at the Department of Infectious Diseases. DF Kirichenko defended his candidate’s dissertation in 1963, and his doctorate — in 1970. From 1971 he headed the Department of Pediatric Infections, and from 1983 — the Department of Infectious Diseases No. 2 with a course in tropical infections.

The Department of Infectious Diseases, since 1983, has been reorganized twice. It was first divided into two departments — the Department Infectious Diseases No. 1 with a course of childhood infections (head of the department — prof. J. P. Latenko), and the Department of Infectious Diseases No. 2 with a course of tropical infections (head of the department — prof. D. F. Kirichenko), and 5 years later the two departments were reunited into one headed by D. F. Kirichenko.

In different years at the department worked the following teachers: N. M Berg, A. G. Loiferman, A. N. Kavlyshynsky, L. I. Bogachik, A. V. Гайдамак, В. А. Bondarenko, I. F. Lutsky, M. P. Nikitiuk, P. D. Kirichenko, А. N. Golovchenko, V. K. Ziva, N. G. Kornilich, E. I. Stogniy, E. T. Yurets, L. V. Razborsky, P. P. Ivanov, G. P. Marchenko, А. А. Shulgina, Т. О. Korchynska, M. B. Koval.

Since 2004, the Department of Infectious Diseases with a course in epidemiology has been headed by a Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Doctor of Ukraine L. V Moroz. Particular attention is paid to the bases of the department and their equipment. Currently, the department operates on the basis of the City Clinical Hospital No. 1 (Infectious Departments No. 1 and No. 2), Vinnytsia Regional Center for AIDS. The research laboratory of the department performs the necessary biochemical, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays with the help of modern equipment.

Teaching is carried out in the following disciplines: infectious diseases (medical faculties No. 1 and No. 2 — V and VI years, dental faculty — IV year); tropical diseases (V year — foreign students of medical faculties); epidemiology (medical faculties No. 1 and No. 2 — V year, dental faculty — IV year).

Back in 1971, the department developed and used for some time a method without machine software control of knowledge with punch cards, and since 1977, as a means of training and control of knowledge clinical and epidemiological tasks created at the department are used.

The department has done a lot of work in connection with the transition to teaching on a credit-module system. Lecturers prepared lectures in all disciplines for reading to their students in a timely manner and according to the new program. Also, in time, the teachers of the department prepared all the methodological documentation necessary for teaching in the credit-module system. “Tests for independent preparation and control of students’ knowledge of infectious diseases” and “Tests for independent preparation and control of students’ knowledge of epidemiology” were prepared and published. These publications are used to prepare questions on systematically carried out computer control of students’ knowledge in various sections of both disciplines (infectious diseases and epidemiology).

The main direction of scientific work of the department is to study the problems of chronic viral hepatitis, HIV/AIDS and opportunistic infections. A hepatology center has been established on the basis of the City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Vinnytsia both to provide practical assistance to the population and to solve various scientific problems.

Over the past 10 years, the staff of the department has published a significant number of scientific papers, defended (under the supervision of L. V. Moroz) 9 dissertations (6 teachers and 3 practitioners).

The All-Ukrainian publishing house “Health of Ukraine” published in 2011-2012 a handbook of infectious diseases “Infectious diseases. Pharmacotherapy” edited by prof. L.V. Moroz (authors — teachers of the Department of Infectious Diseases with a course in epidemiology: Moroz L. V., Korobko A. P., Androsova O. S., Belyakova T. O., Voynalovich O. O., Davydyuk I. O., Kirilenko T. V., Kulyas S. M., Oliper O. A., Popovich O. O., Shkondina O. F., Jacyk I. V.).

Prof. Moroz LV is a co-author of two textbooks: “Infectious Diseases”. Edited by O. A. Golubovska. Kyiv, 2012, 728 pp. (approved as a textbook for students of higher medical educational institutions of the IV level of accreditation by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine); “Epidemiology”. Edited by Kolesnikova I. P. V., 2012, 570 pp. (approved as a textbook for students of higher medical educational institutions of the IV level of accreditation).

Through the efforts of the Rectorate of VNMU (Rector — Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Prof. V. M. Moroz), the Department of Infectious Diseases with a course in epidemiology (Prof. L. V. Moroz), the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (Prof. I. I. Nezgoda) and other members of the organizing committee, on October 6-8, 2010, VIII Congress of Infectious Diseases of Ukraine “Infectious diseases: Achievements and Problems in Diagnosis and Therapy” was successfully held in Vinnytsia.

Conferences on topical problems of infectology are systematically organized and held (Chief Infectious Diseases Specialist of the Vinnytsia Regional Department of Health of the Regional State Administration Prof. L. V. Moroz).

As of today, teaching, research and medical work at the department is carried out by the head of the Department, Professor L. V Moroz, Professor D. F. Kirichenko, Assoc. A. P. Korobko, Assoc. S. M. Kulyas, Assoc. O. O. Popovich, assistants: O. F. Shkondina, O. A. Oliper, L. S. Medvedeva, O. O. Voynalovich, F. D. Rudiy, О. S. Androsova, I. O. Davydyuk, senior laboratory assistants: M. Ya. Tloka, N. P. Korchevna.
