The Department of Hygiene and Ecology of Vinnytsia National Pirogov Memorial Medical University was organized in 1934. In that time on the basis of existing before Pharmaceutical Institute (1921-1930), Ukrainian Institute of Distant Medical Education (1930-1932), Evening Medical Institute (1932-1934) and Research Institute of Health of Rural Dwellers (1932-1934) was organized Vinnytsia State Medical Institute with Medical-preventive and Pharmaceutical faculties. Moreover, the crucial role in this event played one of the founders of the national hygienic science L. Medved, later academician and Minister of Health of Ukraine.

V. Shevchuk, K. A. Zaytseva, O. Y. Bratkova, a senior lecturer N. M. Feschuk; lecturers: O. Y. Aleksandrova, T. I. Honcharuk, L. M. Vakolyuk, R. V. Teklyuk, N. Yu. Lukina, O. B. Dudarenko, I. L. Dunets, N. V. Stoyan; senior assistants: A. O. Bondar, I. I. Motruk; assistants: N. H. Schensna, N. T. Mozhalova, L. M. Striletska.
Over the past 15 years, 1 doctor (I. V. Serheta) and 17 candidates (L. I. Krasnova, I. V. Stempen, L. I. Hryhorchuk, A. Yu. Abunada, O. P. Molchanova, M. A. Redchits, T. V. Shevchuk, N. V. Malachkova, V. M. Mahnyuk, M. M. Shynkaruk-Dykovytska, T. H. Redko, K. A. Zaytseva, O. Yu. Bratkova, B. R. Borovskyy. O. Ye. Aleksandrova, O. L. Cherepaha, N. I. Osadchuk) defended their theses at the department. Now 2 doctoral and 7 PhD are in progress.
In the recent years scientists of the Department performed four regular, one industrial and contractual scientific surveys, another 3 complex scientific researches are in progress. A draft of the State sanitary rules and regulations was developed, 6 methodical recommendations and 22 newsletters were issued, as well as industry innovation with six different issues of modern hygiene.
Research activities are closely associated with productive educational and methodical work. Only in the last 7 years, the department issued 7 textbooks and 15 tutorials that are recommended for use in the practice of medical schools in Ukraine.
