The Department of Endocrinology was established in 1977 on the basis of the course of endocrinology of the Department of Hospital Therapy started in 1968. The first years were a period of formation: development and improvement of teaching methods, preparation of methodological documentation. An unique feature in the history of the department is that it was the first in the former Soviet Union among medical universities in Ukraine.
In September 1981, an associate professor’s course of the Faculty of Advanced Training of Physicians was opened on the basis of the department. In January 1986, due to the increase in students at the Faculty of Postgraduate Education, the department was renamed the Department of Endocrinology of the Faculty of Advanced Training of Physicians and the Faculty of Medicine. At the same time, the faculty trains not only endocrinologists, but also therapists and pediatricians from all over Ukraine.
The first head of the course, then the head of the Department of Endocrinology was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Borys Oleksiyovych Zelinsky (1932-2001), on whose initiative the department was established. He is the author of 10 monographs and 400 scientific papers. Under his supervision, 18 candidates and 1 doctoral dissertation were completed and defended. He trained 6 specialists of foreign countries. Professor B. O. Zelinsky in 1989 was awarded a diploma and a medal of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for the best scientific work, for a textbook of endocrinology — a diploma of the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements, a Diploma of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
The number of teachers at the department at its organization is 5 people, now — 9, including 2 professors — Vlasenko M. V., Vernygorodsky V. S., 3 associate professors — Palamarchuk A. V., Sokur S. O., Fishchuk O. O., 2 assistants PhD Chernobrova O. I., Astapenko-Nizhynska Z. P., as well as 2 men of the laboratory staff.
The department annually enrolls about 1,300 students of 4th, 6th years of medical faculties No. 1 and No. 2, 150 interns, pediatricians, family doctors and obstetricians, as well as about 150 endocrinologists, therapists, pediatricians from all over Ukraine who improve one’s qualification in endocrinology. Clinical residents are constantly studying at the department, there is a postgraduate course, specialists are being trained for other countries through a clinical residency.
The department has the necessary area for educational, scientific and medical work. Each teacher has a study room, an educational and methodical office, and there is a lecture hall. The clinic has a biochemical, radioimmunological laboratory, a functional diagnostics room. To perform educational and scientific work, the clinic is equipped with modern equipment and technical means of training. The educational and methodical office contains all the documentation of the department, tape recorder, library of lectures, TV, necessary educational and methodical literature, including published by the department for students and doctors of the faculty, a large set of color slides from all sections of endocrinology, cladogram. There is a permanent exhibition of medical drugs for the treatment of endocrine patients.
Employees of the department carry out extensive medical and consulting work to improve specialized endocrine care for the population of the region, training and retraining of doctors of various specialties in endocrinology. Associate professors constantly provide consultations to patients in the clinic.
