In 1933-34 on the basis of the course of food and pharmaceutical chemistry of Vinnytsia Pharmaceutical Technical School the departments of biological and general chemistry of Vinnytsia Medical Institute were created.

The Department of Biochemistry were headed by:

1936-1945 — prof. A. A. Kramer, prof. D. S. Vorontsov, prof. P. M. Serkov;
1945-1971 — Assoc. I. S. Roizman;
1971-1973 — Assoc. Y. I. Karbach;

1974-1991 — prof. M. B. Lutsyuk.

The Department of General Chemistry was headed by:

1933-1937 — prof. L. K. Moreinis;
1937-1941 — Assoc. B. I. Soibelman;
1944 — prof. S. M. Chumakov;
1945 — Assoc. S. E. Burkat;
1946-1975 — Assoc. O. D. Despiller;
1975-1991 — Assoc. O. K. Bagriy;

In 1991 the departments of general chemistry and the department of biological chemistry were merged.

The merged department of biological and general chemistry was headed

1991-2001 — prof. M. B. Lutsyuk;
2001-2009 — prof. О. О. Пентюк;
2009-2011 — prof. M. B. Lutsyuk;
Since 2011 — MD, prof. N. V. Zaichko.

By the Order of the Order of April 7, 2017, seven scientists from Vinnytsia National Medical University named after M. I. Pirogov headed by the rector, academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Moroz V. M. were awarded with the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology. The award was received for the work “Creation of Means and Technologies of Efferent Therapy on the Basis of Nanosilica”. The winners of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology were two employees of the Department of Biological and General Chemistry — Prof. Lutsyuk M. B. and Assoc. Shtatko O. I.
