Academic mobility of teachers

New opportunities for collaboration between universities in different countries are emerging thanks to the academic mobility of teachers. Associate Professor of the Department of Medical Physics and Informatics, Ph.D. Seleznyova Ruslana, with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has participated in the international scientific exchange program. During November-December 2019, there was a dialogue between scientists of Kazakhstan (Nazarbayev University, Bouquet University), Lithuania (Vilnius University, Dr. Saulus Nefas), USA (Delta University, Dr. Tolimbek Almas), Russia (Lomonosov Moscow State University, MSU) and Ukraine (Pirogov University of Economics, Dr. Ruslan Seleznyov). The format of the program includes the lectures, seminars, trainings for master’s students and teachers of the university, scientific dialogue for the purpose of creating programs, writing of compatible articles, creation of international programs. This is just the beginning of collaboration. Scientific contacts of Vinnytsia National Medical University is growing, we are moving together with the world community to new horizons.

Academic mobility offer

The British Council, represented by Joan-Anton Carbonello Porro, is developing an academic mobility program that can be hosted by students at our university. In connection with this, a meeting of representatives of the City Defense Council over the Bug took place at the Vinnytsia Pedagogical University. The peculiarity of the proposed project is the academic mobility of students within Ukraine, which will promote mutual understanding and cultural diversity through inter-regional exchange. In order to write a grant application, it is necessary to offer an exchange a group of 10-20 students 2 – 3 courses for a similar group from the University of another, which is located in the area not bordering Vinnytsia. Duration of mutual exchange of 1 or 2 months, during which the British Council will provide students with accommodation, meals and travel expenses.

For example, students medical psychologists can establish contacts with student psychologists, pharmacists – to make transfers with students economists, managers. Deals are accepted from the students in the deans and the Vice-Rector for scientific work

How the brain responds to art

Students and staff of VNMU had a great opportunity to attend a lecture by a prominent scientist, appreciated art and expert in a wide range of disciplines – Belgian art historian and neuroscientist Professor Jan de Mayer: “Bruegel, Bosch and our neurons: how the brain works.”

Professor Jan de Mayer arrived to Vinnytsia at the invitation of the mayor of Vinnytsia and with the assistance of the city marketing and tourism department, got acquainted with the sights of the city, such as the VNMU Museum and Art Museum, an excursion was conducted by the Medical University – anatomical museum and experimental laboratories.

Jan de Mayer’s research focuses on the study of the physiology of the brain and the emotions of a person who contemplates art. The scientist told why the works of Bosch, Bruegel, Rubens, Monet and other artists are recognized as masterpieces around the world. He explained why these pictures stand out from each other and cause an explosion of emotions and what happens in our brains as we look at them. The audience learned that it awakens the imagination, intuition, cognitive perception, knowledge, critical thinking and makes us realize: we have a real work of art before us.

School of clinical cases in Munich

For the second time, the Munich International Case Study School (ICDSS 2019) was held with the participation of students of Vinnytsia National Medical University. Every year Weill Cornell Medical College and two German universities (Technical University of Munich, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) organize a summer school in Munich where students from Germany, the United States and Ukraine practice clinical cases under the guidance of experienced teachers.

In 2019, the school was held from September 30 to October 11, and it’s participants were two students of VNMU: Marina Pisartsova (6th year) and Anastasia Sotnik (5th year). Within 2 weeks 20 clinical cases were discussed by 20 students from Germany, 10 students from the USA and 4 students from Ukraine. The discussion was moderated by teachers and doctors from the US and Germany.

The CDR (Case Discussion Rouns) format is widely used in higher education institutions in the US and Europe and is aimed at developing the clinical thinking skills of senior students and interns.

The basis is a discussion of a real clinical case described in the New England Journal of Medicine, which provides information to students on a dosage basis, as it would come in real communication with a patient. The main difficulty and advantage of the CDR format is the students’ discussion in English of differential diagnostics with detailed analysis of laboratory, instrumental data and explanation of mechanisms.

Achievements of the scientist of our university Prof. Ocheredka

Alexander Ocheredko, MD, Professor, Head. Dep. social medicine and health care organization Vinnytsia National Medical University has developed a new methodology for estimating power / volume observations based on MSMC samplers and bootstrap procedure (MCMC Bootstrap Based Approach to Power / Sample Size Evaluation).

Traditionally, the power/volume of observations has been based on a complex link between first and second-order errors, the volume and distribution of test statistics that served only simple, far-from-reality designs and relevant hypotheses.

New features of the methodology:

Inclusion of data generation mechanism based on MSMS samplers

Power estimation by bootstrap procedure

Important new features of the author’s methodology:

Testing of any hypothesis or even their combinations with the support of modern complex designs

Use of effective tests (which reproduce the informative data matrix)

Hypothesis analysis is possible by interval estimation instead of traditional point estimation
