The Department of General Surgery was founded in 1934. The initiator and one of the organizers of the department was the chief physician of Vinnytsia Regional Hospital, the first head of the educational part of the institute, famous surgeon, scientist and teacher Professor Bolyarsky Mykola Mykolayovych, and the first head of the department was Professor Gurevich Hryhoriy Markovych, born on September 8, 1898 in Gomel. He graduated from the Kyiv Medical Academy in 1920. The works of H. M Gurevich was devoted to the problems of surgical endocrinology, blood transfusion, general and military field surgery.

 

Gurevich H. M was one of the first to introduce blood transfusions in medical institutions of Vinnytsia and the region, created a blood transfusion point which was later reorganized into a regional blood transfusion station. The scientific topic of the department was pathophysiological direction in connection with which pathophysiological and biochemical laboratories were created. In November 1935, the Vinnytsia Medical Institute and the Regional Health Department established a commission to organize and hold the anniversary dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of M. I. Pirogov, consisting of the Deputy Head of the Regional Health Department E. I. Gurevich. and professors Bolyarsky M. M, Gurevich H. M. and Shidlovsky P. S. It was this commission that initiated a petition to the leadership of the region and the republic to grant the estate where M. I. Pirogov lived and the church where he was buried, the status of a museum of the reserve.

 

During the period from 1934 to 1940, 30 scientific papers were published and 3 candidate dissertations were defended.

 

During the Great Patriotic War, H. M Gurevich was the chief surgeon of the Stalingrad and Southern Fronts. In 1943 he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR. He was awarded 4 orders and medals. He died in 1969 and was buried in Kharkiv.

 

Mykola Mykolayovych Golovtsev was one of the first assistants and later an associate professor of the department.

 

In 1940-41 and 1944-45 the department was headed by Moisey Yuliyovych Lorin-Epstein. M. Yu. Lorin-Epstein was born in 1888 in the Baltics. He graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Paris in 1915.

 

From 1945 to 1951 the department was headed by Professor Mykhailo Oleksandrovych Blagoveshchensky who was born on November 8, 1890 in the village of Simbirsk province. After graduating from theological seminary, he entered the medical faculty of Tomsk University, graduating in 1917.

 

At the time the assistants of the department were M. E. Didur, K. S. Vshivtseva, S. A. Pecherskaya, D. A. Kogan and associate professors M. M. Golovetsv and Meerovich. The scientific problem of the department was the study of the consequences of injuries of the disabled people of the Great Patriotic War. Assistant M. E. Didur conducted clinical studies of blood formula in the areas of Zachary-Ged in acute appendicitis.

 

When prof. Blagoveshchensky MM retired, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Arkady G. Karavanov. A. G. Karavanov was born on August 31, 1907 in Kharkiv in the family of a paramedic. In 1931 he graduated from the Kharkiv Medical Institute. His formation as a surgeon and scientist took place in one of the outstanding surgical schools of the state which was headed by Academician V. N. Shamov. His scientific research, carried out under the direct supervision of V. N. Shamov, was experimental in nature and was devoted to the problem of blood transfusion and conservation of organs and tissues.

 

In 1939, A. G. Karavanov successfully defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences on the topic «Prevention of Altitude Sickness by Blood Transfusion».

 

In 1991, the Central Methodical Cabinet of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine recognized the department as a reference among single-profile departments of higher medical educational institutions. Since then, annual meetings and conferences on topical issues of the educational process, the development of activities aimed at improving the teaching of the discipline, meeting materials are published in separate collections and professional journals.

 

Work began on creating a new textbook «General Surgery», the content of which was adapted to the new curriculum created by the staff of the department under the editorship of O. Ya. Fishchenko.

 

After the death of Professor O. Ya. Fishchenko in 1994, the department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor MD Zheliba Mykola Dmytrovych. He graduated from Vinnytsia State Medical Institute named after M. I. Pirogov in 1972. He passed a one-year internship in surgery at the Nemyriv Central Regional Hospital. From 1973 to 1979 he was a resident of the surgical department of the nodal clinical hospital of Vinnytsia station. While doing his practical work, he was engaged in scientific and pedagogical activities. In his formation as a surgeon, scientist and teacher, he owes much to his teachers: Assoc. S. P. Belkania, Professor O. Ya. Fishchenko, Professor G. K. Paliy.

 

From 2016 to the present, the department is headed by Doctor of Medicine, Professor S. D. Khimich who in 1986 graduated with honors from Vinnytsia Medical Institute. From 1986 to 1988 he studied in the clinical residency at the Department of General Surgery. In 1988 he became a laureate of the youth Republican exhibition of scientific and technical creativity. At the time, the foundations of future scientific activity were also laid. In 1988 he began working as a senior laboratory assistant, and in 1990 — as an assistant of the same department. In 2000 he was elected as associate professor of general surgery, and in 2005 he was elected as professor of general surgery at VNMU. Serhiy Dmytrovych is also the Scientific Secretary of the Specialized Academic Council for the Defense of Doctoral and Candidate’s Dissertations in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatric Surgery, as well as the Chairman of the Bioethics Committee of Vinnytsia National Medical University named after M. I. Pirogov. S. D. Khimich is the author and co-author of more than 350 scientific papers, 108 innovation proposals and 15 inventions. He was awarded Diplomas of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the scientist of the year (2019) and is an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and a member of the Board of the Association of Surgeons of Ukraine.
