During the initial period after the liberation of Vinnytsia, there was no foreign language ​​department at the Medical Institute. The course of Latin was taught by V. P. Tikhvinsky, R. Y. Akivison. English and German were taught by part-time high school teachers. In August 1948, the Department of Foreign Languages ​​was organized. Teachers of English at that time were Associate Professor I. O. Plotnikov, R. Y. Kerzhner, L. Y. Trachtenberg. The German language was taught by A. L. Budda and R. Y. Maximov.

From 1949 the department was located in the morphological building. In a short period of time tutorials were written and stands were made.

Since 1950 the staff of the department began the research work. During this period more than 50 methodical works were written.

Associate Professor I. O. Plotnikov published «Methodical instructions for mastering medical terminology in English for senior students» and «Methodical instructions for the 1-st year students in the development of oral language skills».

From 1950 to 1965 the number of students increased and the teaching staff was replenished by teachers: G. I. Boyko, M. G. Shevchik-Stoyan, E. M. Smirnova-Pelishenko, N. P. Matiashch, M. I. Lapukh, S. R. Mazur, N. P. Vasazhenko, V. P. Shevchenko, T. G. Yankiewich, L. F. Gibash, and Senior Laboratory Assistant G. V. Kuzmin. In 1964 the lecturer O. M. Shpak defended the Ph.D. thesis. During this period, the scientific and audit funds consisted of training tables, two players, ten tape recorders and a library.

All employees of the department were engaged in the scientific-research work. The theme of the work was aimed at improving the efficiency of the educational process.

In addition to educational work with students, the staff of the department carried out the training of postgraduate students to take exams in foreign languages, the admission of candidate exams, and the exams of part-time students of dental and veterinary faculties of other universities.

The department has greatly assisted pharmacy management with translating of medicines instructions.

In 1968 — 1971 the staff was joined by new teachers: V. I. Barysheva, L. M. Smirnova-Kasprova, S. S. Grebenyuk-Barchuk, T. A. Ryabokon, T. I. Buravchenkova, L. I. Pushkar and laboratory assistant L. P. Samoilenko.

In 1971 the Head of the Department, Associate Professor I. O. Plotnikov retired. The Senior Teacher of English N. P. Matiashch was appointed the Acting Head of the Department. During this period, the educational work at the department intensified: teachers were curators in academic groups and students’ hostels, preparing parties in foreign languages, conducting quizzes and competitions, which were very popular among students.

In 1980 N. P. Matiashch was appointed the Acting Head of the Department. The same year the staff of the department was replenished with teachers L. M. Yasevina, O. V. Voronyuk, S. I. Perch, L. A. Mazur, V. F. Gurando. The Senior Lecturer A. O. Dyakova was the Deputy Principal. Latin Language Course was organized as part of the Department. At that time the teachers of Latin were A. I. Boyko (Head of the Course), M. G. Stoyan, E. M. Pelishenko, V. F. Gurando, and the Laboratory Assistant Yu. V. Shkarpet. The objects of the scientific work of Latin teachers were the linguistic aspects of clinical terminology, lexical and syntactic features of Latin medical literature and the issues of linguistic regulation of prescription. The department had been operating a translation bureau for many years, which included the best students of the II-IV courses. Each year, more than 6000 pages of articles from English, German and French medical journals were translated.

Since 1983 the department has been working on a new educational base in R. Luxembourg Street, №2/19 (now V. Stus Street). There were 14 study rooms and two linguistic cabinets in the department, which work extra hours for students’ self-preparation for practical classes. Teachers of the department took an active part at conferences in Minsk, Vinnytsia, and Yerevan.

Starting from February 1984, the department was headed by Ph.D., Associate Professor T. A. Ryabokon. T. A. Ryabokon brought a new direction to the work of the department. In order to intensify the educational process of working with scientific medical articles from foreign journals, a number of scientific researches were conducted. The «Text structure and semantics» is among them. As a result of the research, the bilingual translation guides were created as well as the text compression guides in English, German and French. 42 scientific works, 11 manuals on language and teaching methods were published. M. G. Stoyan was the Head of the Latin Section at that time.

Since 1985, 52 innovations have been made at the department, 20 of which belonged to Associate Professor T. A. Ryabokon. L. M. Yasevina was the Deputy Principal of the department from 1985 to 2017.

Responding to the demands of the time, since 2004 the university has begun the work on the training of foreign students in English. The Associate Professor Tykholaz S.I. has developed a course in Latin and the basics of medical (pharmaceutical) terminology for students of medical, stomatological and pharmaceutical faculties. Materials of medical and pharmaceutical terminology for practical classes in English have been prepared and published.

Since January 2016, the Department of Foreign Languages ​​has been headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Sciences (Pedagogy) Dudikova L.V.

Currently, there are 31 Lecturers and 2 Laboratory Assistants, including 1 Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, 10 Associate Professors, 3 candidates of Sciences, 11 Senior Lectures and 11 Lectures.

In April 2016 Vinnitsa National Medical University became the Center for Candidate Training for Participation in the Independent International Examination for Level 2 English proficiency in FCE (First Certificate in English).

Over the three years of its existence, the center has been visited by about 200 staff and scientists of our educational institution, 2 exams have been held, and many candidates have received the international certificate. Today there are 6 groups that study the language at different levels — from A2 to B2. The following faculty members are involved in the work of the Center: Associate Professor Kondratyuk A.L., Associate Professor Mazaikina I.O., Senior Teacher Mikaelian V.V., Senior Teacher Ostraus Y. M., Associate Professor Tsikhotska O.A., Senior Teacher Kostyuk M.I. and other teachers. The work of the Center is headed by Associate Professor Dudikova L.V. Senior Teacher Mikaelian V.V. performs the functions of the Deputy Principal.
